Why Does My Video Email Have No Sound Or Audio?

Email clients don't play sound. Users prefer no sound. But IT DOES drive email engagement and better performing video email campaigns.

In short, email clients (i.e. Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook, etc) do not support any sound capabilities for autoplay videos in emails (if this changes we will let you know!).

Let us explain: when you open a Playable video email, the optimized video that immediately plays is referred to as the Autoplay Video. Due to the lack of sound support from email clients, it is not technically possible to play any sound from an autoplay video, even though Playable can send a video with sound to the email client.

So while you may experience sound during the creation of a video email, it will not play the sound once it is opened in the email client.

The advantages of having no sound:

  • No Sound Is A Great Email Hook. Nearly every email is designed to be clicked. Users instinctively click videos expecting to see the full video with sound.

    • Greater post-click activity (i.e. purchasing, subscriptions, time-on-site).

  • People Don't Want Uncontrolled Sound When They Open Their Email. Unsurprisingly, in this generation of "Tap to unmute" (especially marketing videos), people like to control their volume.

  • Influence Video Production. Successful video email campaigns give insights into video strategy & production to help create stronger performing video content.


What is Playable's VwS (Video with Sound) option?

VwS (Video with Sound) is a feature for Enterprise clients where a video with sound can be streamed to the email once the video in the email is clicked/tapped.
