Before you start
You'll need:
A Playable account with videos ready to export
A Braze REST API key with the
content_blocks.createandcontent_blocks.updatepermissionsYour Braze REST endpoint (for example,
https://rest.iad-01.braze.com)
Get your Braze credentials
Log in to your Braze dashboard.
Go to Settings → API Keys.
Create a new API key, or use an existing one, with the
content_blocks.createandcontent_blocks.updatepermissions.Copy your REST endpoint URL from Settings → API Settings.
Connect Braze to Playable
You only need to do this once.
Log in to Playable and select Braze as your integration.
Paste your API Key and REST Endpoint.
Click Continue to Dashboard.
Export a video as a Content Block
Browse your video library. Click the Play button to preview a video first.
Click Export next to the video you want.
Enter a name for the content block. Use only letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores.
Check Export as draft if you'd like to review the block in Braze before it goes live.
Click Confirm and wait for the success message.
Update a Content Block you've already exported
Videos you've already exported show an Active badge. Exporting one again gives you two options:
Override Existing updates the current content block with the latest version of the video.
Create New makes a separate content block. Enter a unique name for it.
Click Confirm when you're done.
Note: If you've deleted the original block in Braze, choose Create New.
Use the Content Block in a campaign
Log in to your Braze dashboard.
In the left navigation, go to Templates → Content Blocks.
Search for your content block by the name you gave it.
Add it to your email campaign.
Content blocks are reusable, so you can use the same one in as many campaigns as you like.
Where your video will play
Playable automatically sends the best video format for each recipient's email client, device, and connection. Video auto-plays in more than 98% of inboxes, including:
iPhone Mail and Apple Mail
Gmail (iOS, Android, and web)
Outlook for iOS, Android, and Mac
Outlook 365 for Windows (newer versions)
Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail
Recipients on legacy Outlook for Windows see an optimized static image. Older email clients see the video thumbnail with a play button.
Tips
Name blocks clearly. Include the campaign or date, like
summer_sale_hero, so they're easy to find in Braze.Keep videos short. 15 to 60 seconds works best for email.
Use clear thumbnails. They're what recipients see in fallback situations.
Use drafts for review. Export as a draft if someone needs to approve the block before it goes live.
A/B test with Create New. Make a separate block for each video variation.
Test before you send. Check your email in the major email clients before a big campaign.
Place the video high. Put it near the top of the email, followed by a clear call to action.
Troubleshooting
Export failed. Check that your API key has both
content_blocks.createandcontent_blocks.updatepermissions and that your REST endpoint is correct. If that doesn't fix it, disconnect and reconnect your Braze account. Can't find the content block in Braze. It may have been exported as a draft, so check whether Export as draft was ticked. Otherwise, refresh your Braze dashboard, wait a minute or two, and search for the exact name.
Video isn't auto-playing in a test email. Make sure the email client is on the supported list above, and try a different client to compare.
Can't update an existing block. The block may have been deleted in Braze, or your API key may have lost its update permission. Choose Create New instead, or check the key's permissions.
