Why Sound Does Not Play
When a recipient opens a Playable video email, the video that immediately starts playing is called the Autoplay Video.
Although Playable can technically deliver video files with sound, email clients currently block audio playback for autoplay content. This means:
Sound will not play inside the inbox
Audio cannot be enabled automatically
This limitation is controlled by the email client, not by Playable
During video creation and preview, you may hear sound. However, once the email is opened in the inbox environment, audio playback is disabled.
Why No Sound Is Actually an Advantage
While this may seem like a limitation, it consistently drives stronger engagement.
1. No Sound Creates a Click Trigger
Nearly every marketing email is designed to generate a click.
When recipients see motion but do not hear sound, they instinctively click to watch the full video experience with audio enabled.
This increases click through rates and engagement.
2. Higher Post Click Activity
Campaigns using autoplay video without sound typically see:
More completed views
Increased time on site
Higher conversion rates
More purchases and subscriptions
The click acts as an intentional engagement signal.
3. Users Prefer Controlled Audio
Most people do not want unexpected sound when opening their inbox.
Modern digital behavior favors “Tap to Unmute” experiences, especially for marketing videos. Silent autoplay respects user expectations and avoids negative reactions.
4. Better Video Strategy Insights
Video email campaigns provide valuable data about what drives clicks and post click engagement.
This insight helps inform:
Video structure
Messaging
Creative strategy
Conversion optimization
In other words, silent autoplay is not a weakness. It is part of a high performing email strategy.
